Sylvia Massarelli
Conductor
Sylvia Massarelli has conducted some of the best
orchestras of the world including the Wiener Kammer
Orchester, the Orchestre du Capitol de Toulouse, and the New
York Philharmonic Orchestra.
Born in Rome, Ms. Massarelli studied in Rome and Paris
and made her conducting debut with the Ensemble
International de Paris in Paris in 1991. By that time, she
had already been acclaimed as a talented pianist, reaching
international recognition by winning first prize at the
International Piano Competition J.S.Bach in
Paris.
After graduating with honors from the Conservatoire
National Superieur de Musique in Paris in 1992, she won in
1993 the Grand Prix de Direction dOrchestre at the
43rd International Competition in Besançon. A few
months earlier she had obtained the Special Press Prize at
the International Prokofiev Competition in St.
Petersburg.
She was assistant to the renowned conductor M.W.Chung at
the Opera Bastille Theater in Paris for Verdis Simon
Boccanegra, and she also guest conducted at the Nordic Days
Music Festival in Iceland in 1996.
Most recently, Miss Massarelli conducted at the
Auditorium Parco della Musica and gave a conductors
master class at the Musical University of Shanghai. She also
made her lyric debut at the 38th Biennale Festival in
Venice, conducting Haydn's Il Mondo della
Luna to rave reviews!
She lives in Bologna, Italy with her husband and their
two daughters.
